Four trim levels are offered on the 2021 Nissan Rogue, which goes on sale this month: S, SV, SL, and Platinum. All four come standard with front-wheel drive, with all-wheel drive adding $1,400 to the bill. Every 2021 Rogue is powered by the same 181-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT); the powertrain is no powerhouse but should provide above-average real-world fuel economy. (Nissan has long sorted out how to extract good MPGs from relatively low-tech naturally aspirated engines mated to CVTs.) As before, every Rogue comes standard with automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.

Here are a few standout terms to know. ProPilot Assist is Nissan’s branding for its adaptive cruise control and lane-centering function, both of which are intended for use on freeways. ProPilot Assist with Navigation Link is the upgraded system that is tied with the navigation system so it can adjust the vehicle’s speed to suit impending curves, freeway exits, etc. According to Nissan, drivers can now use the upgraded ProPilot Assist setup for up to 30 seconds at a time without “intervention,” meaning an input at the steering wheel.
Notably, the fancier ProPilot Assist is only available on the SL and standard on the Platinum. Nissan throws SV buyers a bone by making the non-navigation-linked ProPilot Assist feature standard on that trim. Wireless Apple CarPlay—meaning users needn’t plug their phones into the car to use the feature—is limited to the top-level Platinum.
How Does the Rogue’s Price Compare to Rivals?
At $26,745 to start, the Rogue’s base price inches northward by only $160 relative to last year’s model. As before, the Rogue is not the cheapest compact crossover or SUV you can buy, but neither is it priced at the high end of the pack. Many competitors start just shy of $30,000, including the GMC Terrain. But the Nissan is priced in the thick of the segment’s heavyweights, being cheaper than the Toyota RAV4 but slightly pricier than the Honda CR-V and Subaru Forester. We’ll have to wait for full testing to see how the Rogue stacks up in our rankings for the compact crossover and SUV segment, but it’ll have stiff competition. Among the players set to be updated or fully redesigned soon include the Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage.
