Max Verstappen made an extra pit stop with three laps to go in an effort to claim the bonus point for fastest lap of the race.

But despite being told the lap time he had to beat – a 1’05.619 set by Carlos Sainz Jnr – and having a quicker car beneath him, plus a set of soft tyres, he ended up half a second shy of the target, and not happy about it.

Verstappen second pit stop dropped him into a group of lapped cars. Although he made his way through them easily thanks to the blue flags, he inevitably lost some time in their slipstream through the quicker corners. “I mean, what’s the point to pit when I’m in traffic?” was his first comment to the team immediately after taking the chequered flag in third place.

While Lewis Hamilton only had the third-quickest lap time of the race behind Sainz and Verstappen, but he clearly had the fastest package beneath him and was able to take it easy as he headed to the chequered flag.

After the race Christian Horner drew attention to the fact Sergio Perez’s Racing Point had been quicker than the Mercedes at some stages. That was undoubtedly true, and Renault clearly have plenty to say about their suspicions concerning the those two teams.

Despite his late-race drama, Perez easily gained the most places, rising 11 places from 17th to sixth by the flag. Had he been a little more patient with Alexander Albon, he might well have made it to fourth, though whether he gets to keep his eventual finishing position is now in the stewards’ hands.
